Key Addness terms explained in one line each.

Last updated: 2026-10-15

Here are the words that come up often in Addness, summed up one line at a time. Where a term had an earlier name, it's shown in parentheses. For terms you want to know in detail, head to the linked article.

Goal structure

TermMeaning
GoalA state you aim for. In Addness, both to-dos and objectives are all handled as goals
Goal treeA tree structure connecting goals in parent-child relationships. The big objective on top, the decomposed small goals below
Top goalThe single biggest objective placed at the very top of the tree. Only one per organization; you can't create a second (→ Getting started as an organization)
Child goal (sub-goal)A goal one level down, made by decomposing a goal
Leaf goalA goal with no children — the unit where you actually do the work
IdealThe field where you write the state once the goal is achieved (formerly "Definition of done" / "Completion Criteria") (→ Goal detail page)
Current statusHow far that goal has progressed now. There's no dedicated field for it; write it in the body of the goal detail

Thinking

TermMeaning
Goal LoopAddness's central concept, combining the goal-achievement loop and the goal-update loop (→ AI Organization Mastery Course, Chapter 2)
Goal-achievement loopThe loop of making the next move from the gap between ideal and current, and updating the current with the result
Goal-update loopThe loop of learning from results and revising the ideal (the goal itself)
GapThe gap between ideal and current
BottleneckThe most stuck place on a goal right now

Daily execution

TermMeaning
ToDosThe list of to-dos you've decided to work on now (formerly "Today's ToDo"). Add them from the goal tree with “+”. They stay until completed or removed (→ Goal page)
Due-date badgeThe "Today," "in ◯ days," "◯ days overdue" display at the right end of a goal row. Press it to change the due date. Past-due ones are red, and ones due within 3 days from today are orange (→ Goal page)
Ask AIThe operation that hands that goal, with an instruction, to an AI (Claude Code, Codex, ChatGPT) from the ✦ on the right of a goal row (inside "…" at mobile widths). There's "Work on it," which has the AI move it forward as-is; "Brainstorm," which decides child goals while talking; and "Ask," which gets just an answer without changing the goal. With "Copy instruction," you can hand it to other AI too. Set the "Instruction handoff" in My Settings, and it opens in one click (→ Goal page)
RoutineA setting that auto-adds a full template set on a set rhythm, like daily reports and regulars (formerly "Recurring goals" / "Standing goals") (→ Templates page)
StreakThe number of consecutive days achieving to-dos. The 🔥 at the top right of the screen. There's also freeze (declaring a day off) and a once-a-month revival
Deleting and restoringHow to tidy up goals you no longer use (goals can no longer be archived). A deleted goal can be brought back with its child goals from "Restore deleted goals" for 30 days after deletion. After 30 days it is permanently deleted (→ Goal detail page)
